The Biggest Screen Is Getting Bigger

The Biggest Screen Is Getting Bigger

image description

We all know TV viewing has jumped since COVID-19 hit. Live and BVOD viewing is up, a lot.

Research from Nielsen shows that 63% of people think bigger is better when it comes to video content. It makes sense that as more people stay home, viewing on the biggest screen in the household – the television – takes priority over viewing on phones, tablets and desktops.

Since the pandemic forced many us to stay at home, total commercial free-to-air TV viewing has climbed 10%. The biggest increases are happening among people aged under 17 and among 25 to 54s.

Here at 10, we are leading the charge with a 26% increase. We were already growing our audience before COVID-19 arrived, but now we are racing ahead.

That’s just overnight numbers. BVOD is booming in this new world. BVOD minutes viewed across 10, Nine, Seven and SBS are up 54% year-on-year, a 16-point improvement on the growth rate before COVID-19.

10 Play is up 36% year-on-year, comparing now to the period last year which included Bachelor In Paradise, one of 10 Play’s biggest shows ever. What are people watching on 10 Play? Well, among other shows, The Bold and The Beautiful is going through the roof (It’s true. All those closest Bold fans are very, very happy) while MasterChef Australia has  audiences coming back for more.
